German Courses in Berlin: Cultural Program

Written by Fernanda

Cultural Activities in Berlin

Experience Berlin!

TANDEM Berlin is here to help you discover at first hand the new Berlin and the special sides of this fascinating city!

Experience Berlin through TANDEM and, in addition to our summer courses, you are automatically enrolled on a cultural program which includes seminars on history, architecture, art and other relevant topics here in the German capital. Together we'll visit Berlin's well-known (and some not so well-known) attractions, attend cultural events, and enjoy a few surprises we have planned as well! These activities take place 3 times a week.

Our intensive cultural program takes place only during the summer. From September to June there are only individual activities such as theatre visits and excursions twice a month.

What's happening in Berlin?

Culture, Events, Nightlife and more:

  • Karneval der Kulturen - Three day party! The Love Parade is gone - no problem. In its place is a three day parade of people, music and costumes from all corners of the world!
  • Zitty Magazine - The online version of Berlin's bi-weekly city magazine with a complete list of events in Berlin.
  • Kulturbrauerei - A former brewery (only 100m from TANDEM) was transformed into a huge cultural and event centre. Every week concerts, parties and more.
  • Berlinale - The International Berlin Film Festival in February

German Courses in Berlin: Accommodation

Written by Fernanda

Accommodation Options in Berlin

The accommodation is an essential part of your stay in Berlin; this is why our school pays special attention to its selection, through periodic visits and the feedback from students.

TANDEM Berlin seeks accommodation in private flats for all students, upon request. Accommodation is always in one of the central districts of the city.

Our hosts are rarely like a classic family model (i.e. married couple with children). Most of our hosts are single people (often with children). In some cases, our students live in a flat share. This means several people (often students) share a flat for both practical and financial reasons.

Your flat-mates may be office workers, or they may be unemployed, they may be artists, students, unmarried couples – that is to say, real Berliners!

If requested we can also arrange accommodation in a private apartment or a room in a pension or hotel, which, however, is more expensive than a shared flat.

You can usually move into your room the day before the course starts and you have to leave the day after the course ends. Anyone who wishes to arrive earlier should tell TANDEM in good time. You pay the rent directly to the landlord after your arrival. Prices vary. The exact price depends on the size, condition, features and facilities in the flat.

Learn German in Berlin, one of the most fascinating European capitals

Berlin is history: in the twenties it was Europe's biggest and most modern city, later the German Nazis turned it into their capital. The city was destroyed by the war, later it became a hotspot of the cold war and then it was divided by the wall for 28 years.

After the wall came down, historic areas in the centre were completely revamped. Nowadays, Berlin is once again one of the greatest European cities: dynamic and inviting. It is not only Germany's political centre, but also its biggest and most culturally diverse city with a unique and vibrant night life.

Are you interested in history and culture? Here you will get an overdose. Berlin has something for everyone - from three opera houses to techno clubs, from art galleries to graffiti on the remains of the Berlin Wall, from Museum Island to Christopher Street Day. If you get tired of visiting cultural events or trendy clubs and meeting new and interesting people, then you can enjoy our big parks, which can be found all over the city. You also can take a trip to the city's green vicinity with its romantic forests and beautiful lakes.

To top it all – Berlin is one of the cheapest metropolises in Europe. Berlin is simply the best.

TANDEM Berlin: German Courses in Berlin since 1983

Our German language school was established in 1983.

Exberliner, Berlin's biggest English speaking magazine wrote in March 2007: «Super friendly and engaging teachers ensure that your German lessons at TANDEM Berlin never seem like hard work. The smooth mix of grammar and conversation will quickly turn your - Ich spreche kein Deutsch - into - Ich spreche tolles Deutsch -. The welcoming atmosphere hits you as soon as you enter the school»

Our German school is located in the trendy district of Prenzlauer Berg, in one of Berlin's typical old residential buildings. The school is well connected with two tram stations just around the corner (Line M4 and line M10). With M 4 it takes less than 5 minutes to reach the central square Alexanderplatz. Prenzlauer Berg is currently the liveliest district in Berlin. This area particularly attracts young people, with its outstanding nightlife and international cultural scene. Close to the school there is the wonderful public park "Volkspark Friedrichshain", very popular in the summertime among young people to hang around, have a barbecue or do sports.

Accreditations:

TANDEM Berlin is licensed by The European Language Certificates and it offers official language exams. Our German courses are also recognized by CSN, the Swedish student aid organisation.
