Cultural Activities in Toulouse, France
Learning a language also means discovering a different culture and way of life. At Langue Onze Toulouse we propose a varied and stimulating programme of extra-curricular activities to give you deeper insight into French history, culture and customs, as well as introducing you to the city of Toulouse. Excursions in the region will allow you to explore local gastronomy - foie gras, salade de chevre chaud (toasted goat cheese), magret de canard, saucisse de Toulouse, cassoulet and violet ice cream, its wines and liqueurs – and learn about the fascinating rebellious political, religious and economic history of the Southwest of France.
Our Cultural Program offers a wide range of activities which take place in the afternoons and evenings. All activities are accompanied by a teacher or French-speaking staff member and most activities are held in French, giving you extra time to practice and improve in fluency.
Your first day welcome to the school and Toulouse includes an information packet detailing upcoming events, hints on what to do and see in town, a guided walking tour of the city and an optional lunch in a typical Toulousan restaurant.
Throughout your course, several afternoons or evenings per week will find you exploring new corners of la ville rose; dancing, dining and taking in concerts and shows, swimming, hiking, cycling along the Canal du Midi; attending conferences and films in French, playing Pétanque or taking a riverboat cruise at sunset. The program includes regular visits to Toulouse features such as the Airbus aircraft assembly line and the Cité de l'Espace.
With its multitude of cultural organizations, museums and more than 20 annual festivals of music, dance, film and art year-round, in Toulouse there's always something happening.

Learn French in Toulouse, «France's best kept secret»
Toulouse, named one of the world's «10 Most Dynamic Cities» by the American magazine «Newsweek» (July 2006 International Edition), has a long history of independence, iconoclasm and innovation.
Known as «La ville rose» for the red brick of its historic centre, the history of Toulouse lives in its streets, in its well-preserved 'hôtels particuliers' and the 49 ornamental towers rising from its mediaeval courtyards. Shaped by the resistance of the idealistic Cathars and the flowering culture of the 15th century merchants of pastel, Toulouse continues its inventive traditions into the 21st century as the n°2 centre of the international aerospace industry and a hub of scientific research.
Currently the 4th largest city in France with a population of 430,000 and growing, Toulouse is also France's 2nd most important university town, after Paris, with the first provincial university to be established in France, in the late 13th century.
The presence of some 140,000 students from all over Europe and the world makes Toulouse a city of cafés and terraces, restaurants and dance clubs, music and bookstores, artist collectives, avant-garde performances and public debates, concerts of every style and a world-famous rugby team. Host to more than 20 annual festivals of music, dance, film, art and literature, at any time of year your stay in Toulouse is likely to be punctuated by public light shows, film projections, art installations, live music and dancing in the streets.
Toulouse is a key location to discover Southern France. Its strategic geographic location at the crossroads to the Pyrenees, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coast makes it easy for students to organize their own weekend excursions to the mountains and sea, as well as to historic villages and sites in the region.
Our highlight
Passionately engaged in their social and work environments, Toulousans are also known to have the southerners' talent for taking the time to live well and appreciate life. In this cosmopolitan and dynamic city, Toulousans are open and friendly with visitors, while shopkeepers and waiters will encourage your efforts to speak French.
A typical free evening in Toulouse starts with an «aperitif», continues with a film, concert or performance, followed by a leisurely dinner in a cozy local 'cave' and ending with a stroll to drink a «digestif» and people-watch at another umbrella-roofed terrace café. The Toulousan philosophy of life will leave you an authentic taste of the traditional French way of life.
Learn French in Montpellier – where the sun never sets
Born at the dawn of the 11th century, today Montpellier embarks upon her third millennium, enriched by ten centuries of history: sometimes tumultuous, sometimes dramatic, often brilliant, and always out of the ordinary! Situated in the center of the Languedoc-Roussillon, surrounded by cities and which date back from antiquity, Montpellier stands out as an exception. The city may be over 1000 years old, but she is undoubtedly the most dynamic and vital of the region.
During the Middle Ages, Montpellier began to develop with stunning rapidity. Within a few centuries, she developed from a simple agricultural domain into a first-class educational, economic, and cultural capital. Despite occasional eclipses, Montpellier succeeded in maintaining and developing the role of capital of the Bas-Languedoc. The 18th century was an exceptionally profitable period for the city.
«La belle Méditerranéenne» thus received a rich inheritance. Visitors from all horizons have made it a country of tolerance. Its scholars have taught respect for culture and knowledge. In more recent times, the flow of new populations, the privileged geographical situation and the prestigious institutions of higher learning have given Montpellier a new lease on life. From her compelling history to current day change and vitality, the dynamic quality of Montpellier remains a constant.
Montpellier highlights:
- Centrally located in the South of France, at the heart of Camargue, between Provence and the Pyrenees
- Average of 300 days of sun per year
- A few miles away from the Mediterranean
- One of the most dynamic and cosmopolitan cities in France
