English Courses in Totnes: about Totnes, England
Learn English in Totnes - the small town with the big heart!
Totnes is a small but busy market town, situated in the beautiful Devon countryside in the South-West of England, near Dartmoor and the South Devon coast.
You can walk around the town in 20 minutes but you will see 50 people on the way! Totnes has the small-town virtue of friendliness and inclusiveness.
What is there to do?
Markets on Fridays and Saturdays and a High Street full of charming shops, restaurants, pubs and attractive cafes give the town a vibrant life of its own. Live music and street entertainment also add to the fun. Local artists display their work in several art galleries and anyone interested in the arts can find a wealth of things to see and do.
Natural health, organic food and a ‘green’ approach is typical of Totnes. Many alternative health therapists choose to live and work in the town and at the Totnes Natural Health centre and The Forge Yoga Centre.
Totnes lies on the banks of the River Dart. There are beautiful and extensive walks and you can canoe on the river, as well as participate in sports at the local Pavilion Sports Centre.
Around and about
Up river, a short walk away from Totnes, is the wonderful Dartington Estate which has regular films and theatre productions. It’s also the venue for the well-known literature festival «Ways with Words» and the International Summer School of Music.
You can also take the steam train to Buckfastleigh, where you can visit the tranquil Buckfast Abbey with its working monastery and picturesque church, or picnic in the nearby Holne Woods on the edge of Dartmoor, one of England’s last great wildernesses.
The Riverlink boat takes you to the seaside town of Dartmouth, passing the former home and gardens of Agatha Christie. Or you can walk to the quaint village of Ashprington and visit the organic Sharpham Vineyard where you can sample the local wine and cheese.
